New macOS 10.16, the latest version of Apple's macOS, will officially be available for download on Mac computers in October 2020. It will be unveiled at Apple's WWDC 2020. Big Sur is both 10.16 and 11.0 – it’s official Apple has confirmed that the next major release of macOS, Big Sur, will identify itself as both version 10.16 and 11.0 according to context. This should put the minds of many at rest, and ease any pressure on updating apps and scripts.

macOS Big Sur 11.0.1 (formerly known as macOS 10.16) was released on November 12, 2020.
macOS Big Sur 11.1 was released on December 14, 2020.

ESET security products compatible with macOS Big Sur 11.0.1 are:

  • ESET Endpoint Security for Mac 6.10.460.1 and later
  • ESET Endpoint Antivirus for Mac 6.10.460.1 and later
  • ESET Cyber Security 6.10.460.1 and later
  • ESET Cyber Security Pro 6.10.460.1 and later
  • ESET PROTECT Cloud Live Installer for Mac 1.0.808.0 and later
  • ESET Management Agent
  • ESET Full Disk Encryption for Mac

Does it work with Big Sur 11.1 and later?

Yes, ESET products for Mac are compatible with macOS Big Sur 11.1 and later.

Do ESET products for Mac work on Macs with ARM processors?

Yes. The following ESET products for MAC support the Apple M1 chip using Rosetta 2:
  • ESET Cyber Security and ESET Cyber Security Pro version 6.10.600.0
  • ESET Endpoint Antivirus and ESET Endpoint Security version 6.10.900.0

Known issues for the latest version

Earlier macOS support

If you are not planning on upgrading your Mac to Big Sur, version 6.10 of ESET products fully support macOS 10.12 to macOS 10.15, and all features are functional.

I already upgraded my Mac to macOS Big Sur with ESET product version 6.9 and earlier installed.

If you have upgraded your Mac to the beta version of macOS Big Sur and you have ESET product version 6.9 and earlier, your computer will not be protected, and you will receive the following message:

Unsupported macOS version
This ESET product does not support your current version of macOS 10.16.

In this case, we recommend that you upgrade your ESET product to version 6.10 and keep it updated to regain the missing features right after their release.

I am an administrator managing Macs using ESET Security Management Center (ESMC), and I already upgraded my Macs to macOS Big Sur with ESET product version 6.9 and earlier installed.

ESMC agent is supported on macOS Big Sur, and you will receive product status in ESMC. However, because ESET products for Mac version 6.9 are not supported on Big Sur, you will receive the following status:

In this case, we recommend that you upgrade your ESET product to version 6.10 and keep it updated to regain the missing features right after their release.
Upgrade ESET endpoint products using one-click action in ESMC 7.

I upgraded my Mac to macOS Big Sur with ESET product version 6.10 already installed before the upgrade.

You upgraded your ESET product to version 6.10 on Mac with macOS 10.15 and earlier and upgraded to macOS Big Sur.

System extensions need to be allowed manually. You will receive the following warning dialogs:

After allowing system extensions, you will also need to allow full disc access for your ESET product to work correctly. You will receive the following warning dialog:

After allowing system extensions and full disc access, your ESET product is functional.

Due to version 6.10 limitations mentioned earlier in this article, you will also receive notification about the missing functionality.

Before upgrading make a full back up of your Mac. Check with developers of any third party apps that there are updates available so those apps will continue to work in the chosen OS. Also check with manufacturers of printers/ scanners etc that you have to see if there are updated drivers and software so they will continue to function.
