Parallels has released version 16 of its Parallels Desktop virtualization environment designed for Apple Macs. The new version focuses on improving graphics performance: Users of virtual Windows and Linux machines should benefit from DirectX 11 graphics that are up to 20 percent faster than the previous version of Parallels Desktop and improved support for OpenGL, such as the manufacturer promises.
3D support in macOS 11
The latest version, Parallels Desktop 16, comes optimized to support the latest Windows 10 updates and macOS Big Sur. With Parallels, you will stay up to date and work without interruption, thanks to the constant updates and seamless integration. ☛ Get Parallels Desktop 16 For Mac - how to get Parallels Desktop 16 on Mac. Big Sur is prerelease software and I would strongly recommend doing a Time Machine backup of your data and rolling back to macOS Catalina as soon as possible, To address your issue, Parallels Desktop isn't working on the developer beta and Parallels needs to update it to support Big Sur. The virtualization of macOS 11 Big Sur now supports programs with 3D functions that rely on Apple’s metal interface, so Parallels – including Final Cut Pro, Apple Maps and Adobe Premiere. Obviously this requires a subscription to Parallels Desktop.
Parallels Desktop 16 is also ready to be installed on macOS Big Sur. There the virtualizer now relies on Apple’s hypervisor and gets by without old kernel extensions. This also simplifies the installation, which means that there is no need for cumbersome permission to import the kernel extensions or a restart, as Parallels explains. Apple already lists the classic kernel extensions (Kexts) as “discontinued”; they are to be replaced by modern system extensions that do not intervene deeply in the operating system.
Deeper Windows integration
Parallels Desktop 16 is also said to start much faster and to shut down and resume virtual Windows machines more quickly. New printing options are also available in Windows programs, including duplex printing and different sizes of paper. Windows VMs can also automatically reclaim unused space after shutdown. If “Do Not Disturb” is activated on the Mac, Parallels wants to activate the mode in Windows as well. Windows programs also support multi-touch gestures on Apple trackpads, such as zooming and rotating.
The manufacturer did not announce any news about virtualization on upcoming ARM Macs. Parallels has already announced support for Macs with Apple’s in-house ARM-based processors, but does not provide any further details for the time being – such as the operating systems supported as VMs.
Parallels Desktop 16 costs 100 euros as a perpetual license, the manufacturer estimates 50 euros for an upgrade from any previous version. As a subscription, the basic version costs 80 euros per year, the Pro version with additional functions costs 100 euros per year (upgrade: 50 euros per year). Parallels Toolbox and Parallels Access are included in the subscription.
